The following is a conversation between Latinx Flint Media and Juan Gutierrez:
Where are you from?
My family is from México, but I was born in Saginaw.
How do you feel as a Latino growing up in school? Do you feel different?
Yeah kinda. There is barely any Mexicans in my school.
Do you play any sports?
I play football and I want to start playing basketball.
What is your dream? What do you see yourself doing in the future?
Well, I don’t even know. Everyone always asks me that and I don’t know. If I had to do pick one it would be to play in the NBA.
Bridging language & cultural barriers para una comunidad saludable!
What has been one of the happiest moments of your life?
When I got my PS4! It was on April Fools day. My uncle got me a PS4 and I thought he was just kidding. I opened it and I said, “It’s a play station!”
Who is your role model?
My brother. He is so positive and energetic.
How was your experience going back to México?
When I first went to México, I wasn’t scared, but my stomach kept on hurting. I was nervous. The difference I saw was that at 10-12 PM everyone is out in the park and when I came back to America, no one was out. It was just bedtime.
